There’s usually one table where everyone wants something different.
One person already knows they’re ordering Butter Chicken. Someone wants vegetarian food. Someone else wants something they haven’t tried before. And there’s always one person who starts reading the cocktail list before anyone has opened the food menu.
If that sounds like your table, Bhang makes things pretty easy.
Tucked into a converted warehouse at 1/2A Mitchell Street, just off Sydney Road, Eat Drink Bhang is an Indian restaurant in Brunswick built around food that works well in the middle of the table.
Start with a few snacks. Add a couple of curries. Get some rice and naan involved. Order something familiar, something new, and let everyone find their favourite as the plates move around.
Start With a Few Things for the Table
The easiest way to order for a group is not to make everyone choose one dish straight away.
Start small.
A few snacks get the table going while everyone works out what they’re actually hungry for.
At Bhang, that could mean Crispy Spinach, Bhang Samosas, Pani Puri, Kerala Fried Chicken, Nepalese Momos or Eggplant Chips.
Order a couple for the middle and let everyone get involved.
The only problem is working out who gets the last piece.
One Familiar Curry, One You Haven’t Tried Yet
There’s nothing wrong with ordering the dish you already know you like.
That’s why Butter Chicken is still on the menu.
But a shared dinner gives you room to order something alongside it that you might not have chosen on your own.
Butter Chicken
Tender chicken in a spiced tomato and butter sauce, finished with cream.
A familiar starting point if you want one.
Kori Gassi
A Mangalorean chicken curry with curry leaves, chilli and coconut.
Kori Gassi has been part of Bhang since day one and remains one of the dishes closely tied to the restaurant’s regional Indian approach.
Rajasthani Goat
Slow-cooked bone-in goat with red chillies, garlic and fresh coriander.
Prawn Moilee
Prawns simmered with turmeric, ginger, coconut, tomatoes and spinach.
Order one you know. Add one you don’t.
That’s usually when sharing gets interesting.
Vegetarian Food Shouldn’t Feel Like the Backup Plan
When a table has different preferences, vegetarian food shouldn’t be the one dish added at the end because someone remembered they needed it.
Bhang’s vegetarian curries have plenty going on in their own right.
There’s Bharli Vanghi, with eggplant, roasted spices, peanuts and coconut in a Maharashtrian curry.
Gobi Korma brings roasted cauliflower, blackened raisins, toasted cashews and almond curry.
Butter Paneer Masala has golden-fried paneer in a buttery tomato masala.
And Charred Broccolini comes in a creamy coconut curry with mint, ginger, turmeric and coriander.
Put a few of those next to the meat and seafood dishes and suddenly nobody is ordering from “their side” of the table anymore.
If anyone has allergies or dietary requirements, speak with the team before ordering so we can help you work through the menu.
Don’t Want to Choose? Get a Thali
Some nights you want to order the whole table.
Other nights you want someone else to make the decisions.
That’s where the Bhang Thali comes in.
The one-course platter includes a weekly rotating curry, momo, samosa, vegetable curry, daal, raita, gulab jamun, rice, pappadum and naan.
Veg Thali — $29.90
Non-Veg Thali — $33.90
It gives you a little bit of everything without turning dinner into a committee meeting.
The Thali also has a personal connection to Bhang. Sway’s first experience with one was in a busy Thali restaurant in India, where dish after dish kept finding its way onto the plate.
That sense of generosity and variety is what Bhang wanted to bring back to Melbourne.
Or Keep It Simple With Biryani
If you’re in the mood for one proper plate rather than working your way around the table, there’s Chef’s Biryani — $24.90.
It’s layered spiced basmati rice served with classic raita and hot pickles, with a choice of:
Chicken 65
Goat-on-bone
Sri Lankan Eggplant Moju
Sometimes everyone wants something different.
Sometimes everyone just wants biryani.
Both are valid.
Rice, Naan and the Things Everyone Reaches For
Curries need company.
Add basmati or saffron rice, then get a few naan on the table.
Choose from:
Plain or butter naan
Garlic naan
Gluten-free naan
Garlic cheese naan
Chilli cheese naan
There’s also kachumber, hot sour pickles and house-made dips if the table needs a little more.
Nobody ever regrets ordering another naan.
What About Drinks?
The drinks deserve their own round of decisions.
Bhang’s cocktail menu takes plenty of cues from ingredients and flavours that also show up in the kitchen.
There’s the Curry Leaf Margarita, Kheera Masala, Karnataka Tiger, Queen of Kerala, Indian Whiskey Sour, Rum Lassi and Varanasi Negroni, among others.
Not drinking?
There are zero-proof options including:
Tamarind Fizz
Passion Chandni
Cardamom Crush
There’s also wine, beer, whisky and Mango Lassi.
So the person who wants a cocktail, the person who wants a glass of wine and the person skipping alcohol can all stay in the same conversation.

Put a Few Things in the Middle and See What Happens
You don’t need everyone at the table to want the same thing.
That’s kind of the point.
Order something familiar. Try something new. Pass it around. Get another naan if you need one.
We’ll handle the rest.
