Indian Restaurant Near Northcote: A Little Something Different at Bhang

Some dinner plans are easy. Someone suggests Indian food, everyone agrees, and the only question left is where to go.

Other nights, one person wants a curry, someone else has cocktails in mind, and the group chat is already getting complicated.

If you're in Northcote, Eat Drink Bhang might make that decision a little easier.

We're tucked into a converted warehouse at 1/2A Mitchell Street in Brunswick, just off Sydney Road. It's a place for Indian street food, regional curries, interesting cocktails and evenings that don't have to follow a schedule.

From Northcote, we're approximately 3.8 km away, or an 11–12 minute drive, depending on traffic and where you start.

Come over for dinner with someone special, a catch-up with friends or simply because cooking at home doesn't sound appealing tonight.

Start With Something You Can Pass Around

Indian dishes served on a table with guests sharing food at Eat Drink Bhang in Brunswick.

There's something satisfying about a table where everyone gets to try a little of everything.

One person orders the samosas. Someone suggests the Pani Puri. Then a plate arrives that nobody originally planned to order, and it ends up being everyone's favourite.

At Bhang, the menu takes inspiration from regional Indian cooking, particularly Mumbai, Goa and Kerala.

For a few bites to start, try:

Bhang Samosas β€” three samosas filled with spiced potato and peas, served with tamarind raita.

Pani Puri β€” six crispy cracker balls filled with potatoes, peas and spiced water.

Kerala Fried Chicken β€” crispy chicken served with date tamarind.

Eggplant Chips β€” chickpea-battered eggplant with tomato kasundi.

You can order one to start, or put a few in the middle and share the lot.

There's no wrong way to begin.

The Curry You Know, and the One You Haven't Tried Yet

You might come in knowing exactly what you want.

Butter Chicken, garlic naan, perhaps some rice. Nothing wrong with that.

But if you've been ordering the same thing for years, Bhang has a few other ideas.

Mangalorean Chicken combines curry leaves, chillies and coconut, while Prawn Moilee brings together turmeric, ginger, coconut, tomatoes and spinach.

For something slow-cooked, there's Rajasthani Goat, prepared on the bone with red chillies, garlic and coriander.

The vegetarian curries deserve just as much attention.

Bharli Vanghi is a Maharashtrian eggplant curry with roasted spices, peanuts and coconut. Gobi Korma combines roasted cauliflower, blackened raisins, cashews and almonds.

And if Butter Paneer Masala is calling your name, go with it.

The best part of eating together is that you don't always have to choose between the familiar and something new.

Everyone Eats a Little Differently. That's Fine.

One person wants something vegetarian. Another is checking vegan options. Someone else needs to know which dishes contain nuts.

It's part of organising dinner with a group.

At Bhang, our menu includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, with dietary labels to help you choose.

You'll find dishes such as Charred Broccolini, cooked in a cashew and almond korma curry, and Bharli Vanghi, made with eggplant, roasted spices, peanuts and coconut.

For something crispy, the Eggplant Chips are served with tomato kasundi.

Some dishes contain nuts, and cross-contamination may occur. If you have food allergies or specific dietary requirements, please let our team know when ordering.

There's a Story Behind This Little Warehouse

Bhang opened in July 2017, but the connection to Brunswick goes back further.

Owner Sway has spent more than 30 years in hospitality, including running her own businesses for over two decades.

Bhang began as a project with Dougal, inspired in part by their travels through India and their interest in regional food.

They transformed the warehouse themselves, keeping its tucked-away character rather than turning it into something overly polished.

Today, Sway runs Bhang herself. She's involved in the restaurant, from welcoming guests on the floor to helping shape the menu and bar.

Over the years, Bhang has become a place where regulars bring their friends, families celebrate milestones and people return for another evening around the table.

That's the kind of restaurant we want to be.
