There’s usually one question that comes before date night.
“Where should we go?”
You want somewhere that feels like you made an effort, but not somewhere so formal that dinner starts feeling like an interview.
If that sounds familiar, Eat Drink Bhang makes things pretty easy.
Tucked into a converted warehouse at 1/2A Mitchell Street, just off Sydney Road, Eat Drink Bhang brings together Indian food, cocktails and a relaxed setting for dinner for two.
Come straight from work. Dress up if you feel like it. Start with a drink and figure out the rest when you get here.
Start With a Cocktail
A drink first gives you a minute to settle in.
Eat Drink Bhang’s cocktail list takes plenty of cues from the kitchen, with ingredients like curry leaf, chilli, mango, coconut, chai and cardamom showing up behind the bar.
You might start with a Curry Leaf Margarita, Kheera Masala, Karnataka Tiger or Queen of Kerala.
There are also wine, beer, whisky and zero-proof options if cocktails aren’t your thing.
Have a look at the Indian-inspired cocktails before you come.
Order a Few Things Between You
Date night doesn’t need a complicated ordering strategy.
Start with a couple of snacks and go from there.
There’s Crispy Spinach, Bhang Samosas, Pani Puri, Kerala Fried Chicken, Nepalese Momos and Eggplant Chips.
Then add a curry, some rice and naan.
Butter Chicken might be the familiar choice. Kori Gassi, Rajasthani Goat or Prawn Moilee might be the dish you decide to try because the other person said, “That sounds good.”
That’s part of the fun.
See the Indian food menu before you book.
A Few Food and Cocktail Pairings Worth Trying
If you like matching dinner with something from the bar, there are a few combinations worth trying.
Curry Leaf Margarita + Kerala Salmon
The curry leaf in the cocktail sits comfortably alongside the spice and richness of the salmon.
Karnataka Tiger + Prawn Moilee
A good match if seafood is where dinner is heading.
Kheera Masala + 2-Way Chicken Tikka
Fresh, spiced and a good option if you’re ordering a few things between you.
You don’t need to turn dinner into a pairing exercise. Order what sounds good and see where the night goes.
One Vegetarian, One Not?
That’s easy enough.
Vegetarian dishes include Bharli Vanghi, Gobi Korma, Butter Paneer Masala and Charred Broccolini, along with vegetarian snacks and the Veg Thali.
So one person can order Butter Chicken while the other still has plenty of proper choices.
If either of you has allergies or dietary requirements, speak with the team before ordering so we can help you work through the menu.
Try the Bhang Thali
If you want a bit of everything without spending half the night deciding, the Bhang Thali is a good option.
The Veg Thali is $29.90 and the Non-Veg Thali is $33.90.
Each one brings together a weekly rotating curry, momo, samosa, vegetable curry, daal, raita, gulab jamun, rice, pappadum and naan.
There’s a personal story behind it too.
Sway remembers sitting down for Thali in India and watching one dish after another arrive on the plate. That sense of variety and generosity stuck with her and became part of what she wanted to bring back to Eat Drink Bhang.
If you want to look through everything before deciding, see the full menu.
Stay for Something Sweet
If dinner is going well, there’s no need to rush off after mains.
Dessert includes Gulab Jamun, Chai Sticky Date Pudding and Affogato.
Or stay for another drink.
Both are valid ways to finish the night.
A Date Night That Doesn’t Feel Too Formal
Eat Drink Bhang has been in Brunswick since 2017.
The restaurant sits inside a converted warehouse that Sway and Dougal worked on themselves when Eat Drink Bhang opened.
The room still has that slightly tucked-away, handmade Brunswick feel.
Sway has spent more than 30 years in hospitality and is still regularly on the floor talking to guests and keeping an eye on the room.
It’s relaxed enough for a midweek dinner, but still feels like you went somewhere for the night.
